Humeniuk is now studying for her Classical Accordion MA at the Royal Academy of Music under Owen Murray

26th October at 18.00, All Saints Church, Durham Road London N2

Foreign students have been the lifeblood of the accordion department at the Royal Academy of Music and have kept the department going when we haven’t had enough home-grown students getting to the level needed to enter.  Since the academic year of 1986-87, Owen Murray, who convinced the RAM that accordion should be taught, he has kept the department going and has, as a result produced a fine crop of both British and International professional accordionists.

Studying there however is not as easy as it used to be.  Brexit has meant that students from the EU can rarely afford the £22K+ annual fees (plus the costs of accommodation and sustenance) unless they get help from the RAM via a full or partial scholarship. Many go to study elsewhere in the EU where it costs less or is very often completely free of charge. Thankfully, a few still manage to come from places further afield and the department soldiers on.

One such student hailing from Ukraine is Yulia Humeniuk. She is currently doing her MA at the RAM and will be doing a concert on the 26th October at 18.00 at All Saints Church, Durham Road London N2 in order to try and help fund her studies. She is also hoping to find some accordion students she can teach whilst she studies.

I’m sure ZZ Music subscribers will do their very best to support her concert and help fund her education in these troubled times for her and her family back in Ukraine. She will be playing music by Back, Mozart and Angelis amongst others and tickets are available at the door.
