The London Concertante – A Night at the Opera – 14th September, Guildford Cathedral – 19.30

A chamber orchestra which always includes an accordionist

On Saturday 14th September at 7.30pm, Romano Viazzani will play with a marvellous chamber orchestra – The London Concertante. It won’t be the first time.  Viazzani is depping for accordionist, Edward Hession whose chair this normally is.  It’s the second time this year and he enjoys it immensely. Accordionist, Ilona Suomalainen also plays regularly with the ensemble. The chamber orchestra will be playing excerpts from famous operas in their concert series entitled “A Night at the Opera”.  Being a 12-piece chamber orchestra, the accordion helps to pad out out the woodwind and horn parts as the majority of the repertoire would employ a full size orchestra under normal circumstances.  The pieces are very well arranged and the sound they make is much bigger than their numbers suggest. It’s wonderful that they employ the accordion to this effect, in a role where it doesn’t really have to sound like an accordion, or be the star attraction, but instead blend in beautifully with the other instruments.
