Gaudini 41key/120 Bass Accordion £1200 (Used)
Price – £1200.00
A very interesting instrument. One for a collector possibly, a jazz accordionist or someone requiring a lighter instrument. This is due to there being only 3 sets of treble reeds. It has 1 set of 4′ treble reeds, 1 set of 8′ treble reeds and 1 set of 16′ reeds (piccolo, clarinet and bassoon only) . Some may miss having the extra set of 8′ reeds to provide a tremolo but many accordions were made this way in the past and were usually referred to as “organtone” instruments. They usually had one or two sets of reeds in cassotto. The reed block arrangement of this unique instrument practically creates a triple cassotto! This is known as “sommieri a reazione”. One might imagine that with all three sets of reeds having a cassotto effect the instrument would have plenty of body but little cutting-through power. This accordion has plenty of both. It is very pleasurable to play and has very responsive reeds which you would expect from an accordion of 1950s/60s vintage. Take a good look at the photographs to see how the reed blocks of this instrument work to get a triple cassotto effect. The left hand has plenty of punch too and the keyboard is very nice too. Gaudini had a shop in London’s West End in the 1950s and had accordions made in Italy to his specification. We’re guessing this might be made by one of the Sopranis of Castelfidardo judging by it’s look or possibly Federfisa which may have been a federation of accordion makers as the label on the back suggests. Accordions were sold with the Federfisa marque emblazoned on the instruments but no reference is made to it in the Castelfidardo Museum’s list of accordion manufacturers. The reeds are almost certainly “A Mano” reeds judging from the colour of the cross section of the reed. The instrument is used but in surprisingly good condition so has been well looked-after.
