February 2019 Accordion Weekend – Half Board

Message from John Romero and Carillon Studios

“Due to a number of issues, we have over the past months been considering what to do with our festivals and have in fact been considering shutting them down. We have however recently been offered help and it is with great pleasure we can announce Gennaro Fiondella and Colette McKeown are about to join our team. This will enable our Accordion Weekend Holidays to continue on into the foreseeable future”.

There will be loads more information to come as we get the festival organised and we are now taking bookings above.

A first solo accordion CD from Miloš Milivojević! Accord for life

Miloš Milivojević - Accord for life - CD

A long-awaited first solo album by Miloš Milivojević is released by Nimbus

ZZ Music is so pleased to present Accord for life this outstanding new album by one of the world’s top accordionists. Miloš Milivojević was part of Owen Murray’s golden generation of accordion students at the Royal Academy of Music in the early 21st century when he studied there after arriving from that other hotbed of accordion talent, Serbia, and has since been very active both in his adopted home city of London and all over the world. The album is well worth the wait. It’s beautifully recorded and played on Milivojević’s super Pigini Nova classical accordion which he has recently acquired.  It is programmed much like a live concert taking us on a journey from the accordion’s popular transcription works of major Baroque composers like Bach and Scarlatti, rarer transcription works from the Romantic period with composers like Mendelssohn and Sarasate and then on to contemporary works by Vlasov, Angelis and Semenov. The Sarasate is saved though for the finale with the blistering Tarantella rounding off what is a really enjoyable and excellent album and shows what a mature musician Milivojević is, with extraordinary technical ability, sensitivity and good taste.

We wish him well with this wonderful classical accordion album and he deserves success as it is rare that one finds one so talented, seriously dedicated and musical in his playing and yet so humble, fun and easy-going in person.

PUSH THE BUTTONS concert with LAO and Dillie Keane at Union Chapel 1st December 2018

LAO-Dillie Keane

The London Accordion Orchestra, some of London’s top accordionists and Fascinating Aida’s Dillie Keane make this event nothing short of a mini festival!

Saturday 1st December  2018 Midday till 2.00pm Union Chapel, Upper Street, Islington, London Pay what you can on the door

What a great way to kick off Advent with a musical pre-Christmas treat! Union Chapel, one of the best venues in London, have asked Ian Watson to curate a wonderful concert showcasing the accordion. The London Accordion Orchestra (LAO) will be playing playing a world premiere by Christian Forshaw. In the second part of the concert Bartek Glowacki, Illona Suomalainen, Inigo Mikeleiz Berrade and Aine Mcloughlin will play solos showing the vast range of repertoire accordionists are now playing. Then in the 3rd part of the show the wonderful Dillie Keane (from Fascinating Aida) will be singing for a cabaret set. It will be a fun concert but with some seriously good playing. In the two intervals members of the orchestra will be ‘busking’ in different parts of the chapel playing street music from all over the world.  Last time the LAO played at the Union Chapel about 700 attended the event. Hoping to match or even better that this time.  In addition they also nominated for best Union Chapel concert of 2017 along with Ed Sheeran and Emily Sande!

Patrick Colson receives his Beltrami CVC5 accordion

Patrick Colson and his Beltrami CVC5

He’s grown so much over the last year that he needed something bigger!

Patrick Colson is one of Romano Viazzani’s star students.  He started piano lessons from scratch in 2012 and has made steady progress to the point where he is now studying for his Grade 8 Piano.  About three years ago, witnessing his phenomenal progress on Piano, Romano Viazzani suggested he might like to try out the accordion too.  He agreed and purchased a small classical button accordion with a converter mechanism so that from the start he could learn both the Standard and Free bass systems.  True to form, he made rapid progress on this instrument too.  Meanwhile at secondary school he also took up the drums and the clarinet!  Patrick is very creative and loves composing music too. Now a teenager, he has made rapid progress size-wise too! His small student instrument was starting to look like a toy on him so he wisely invested in a full-sized professional instrument.  Luckily a very nice previously-owned instrument was available which belonged to Mauro Carra who sadly recently gave up playing professionally. Happily this wonderful instrument has found a new home in the hands of an emerging young musical talent.

Patrick’s Beltrami CVC5 is a double cassotto 64/120/58 converter instrument with the usual reed configuration in the right hand manual of 16’C + 8’C + 8′ + 4′ and with % sets of reeds in the Left-Hand manual with 3 sets of the free bass reeds configured as 8′ + 8′ + 4′ plus octave doubler. It has a wonderfully warm, played in sound from its hand made Voci Armoniche reeds.

I have a feeling we’ll be hearing a lot more from Patrick in the future if he maintains his rapid learning curve, and it’s lovely to see a new generation of young people choosing this most wonderful and versatile instrument that is the accordion!
