Southern Cone Quintet Lunchtime Concert – St James’s Church, Piccadilly, London W1J 0

Friday December 16th 13.10 – 14-00

Southern Cone Quintet perform their last concert of 2016 at the prestigious St James Piccadilly as part of the popular lunchtime concerts series. The Ensemble will be premiering new arrangements and compositions.

Entry is free and open to all.

Southern Cone Quintet takes its name from the geographical area of the same name, embracing the countries of Uruguay, Argentina and Chile. The Southern Cone has a rich and diverse musical tradition, with genres including Tango, Cueca, and Candombe, as well as indigenous ethnic forms such as Mapuche music.

It is from this rich earth that the Southern Cone Quintet draws its inspiration. The repertoire consists of re-arrangements of pieces from a wide variety of sources. From twentieth century composers like Astor Piazzolla and Violeta Parra, to traditional folk songs and ancient native chants. While the style resembles Nuevo Tango, it could also be described as “Nueva Cueca” or “Nuevo Candombe”.

The performers are as diverse as the music itself. They include a Chilean-born arranger and woodwind player, a Spanish prodigy accordionist, a classical violinist of Bosnian roots, as well as a jazz guitarist and double bassist (both British).

Anisa Arslanagić – violin
Claude Werner – clarinet/flute/arranger
James Kitchman – electric guitar
Iñigo Mikeleiz Berrade – accordion
Louis Thomas – double bass

She Loves Me - Menier Chocolate Factory

She Loves Me – Menier Chocolate Factory – 25 November 2016 till March 4th 2017

A wonderful musical set in a Perfumery in Hungary. Meet Amalia and Georg, who work as clerks in Maraczek’s Parfumerie — and aren’t exactly the best of friends. However, they have something in common. They both rapturously write to romantic pen pals. Despite the anonymity of their secret admirers, they live for the love letters that they exchange and the day they will finally meet. This wonderful love story has been the basis for the films The Shop around the Corner and You’ve Got Mail. The musical version – written by the authors of Fiddler on the Roof, Jerry Bock and Sheldon Harnick– has delighted audiences since its 1963 Broadway premier and features a sparkling score that includes the now-classic songs Ice Cream and A Trip to the Library.

An amazing cast including Scarlet Strallen, Mark Umbers, Les Dennis, Katherine Kingsley, Dominic Tighe make this a wonderful, funny musical with great songs and fun for all the family.  One of comparatively few musicals with accordion in the orchestra which in this production is played by Romano Viazzani.
